Who says Valentine’s Day has to = either a romantic dinner with your S.O. or hiding at home with a tub of ice cream? We’re in favor of celebrating all kinds of love, whether that means a fun outing with platonic friends, taking yourself on a fun solo adventure, or doing something a little off the beaten path with your Valentine. Whether you’re single, coupled, or somewhere in between, Southwest Michigan has an outside-the-box Valentine’s Day activity for you!

Here are a few ideas:

Hurl some axes.

Nothing says “love” like chucking a heavy, sharp object through the air! Lumberjax offers coached and supervised (read: it’s safer than it sounds) “urban axe throwing” experience that could be the perfect way to bond with your buds or your bae. Or go solo: haven’t you always wanted to meet a sexy lumberjack? Or BE the sexy lumberjack others want to meet? Here’s your chance.

Lumberjax is offering a Valentine’s Day special: 30-minute sessions for $20/thrower, from 4:00 – 8:30 on Friday, February 14. Message them on their Facebook page with your name, phone number, email, number of throwers, and requested time slot, and they’ll be in touch.

Enjoy cover art through the decades

Love vinyl? Anna Russo Sieber Gallery,, in collaboration with 3 Pillars Music, will be exhibiting over 150 album covers, ranging from the 1950s to the 1990s and covering a wide range of genres: rock, surf, jazz and much more. OVER 150 ALBUM COVERS, ranging from the 1950’s to the 1990’s rock, surf, jazz & more. The event is FREE, and will include wine, beer, small bites, and other refreshments, plus live music. Get all the details here.

Laugh with your pals at a comedy that celebrates friendship

The Twin City Players comedy “Savannah Sipping Society”, about four Southern women bonding over cocktail hour, has been getting a ton of great press – we’ve heard that it’s the funniest anyone has seen in this area in a long time – and this is the last weekend to catch the show before it closes. If you see the show on Friday the 14th (showtime is 7:30pm), you’ll even get a chocolate heart to nibble. Can’t make it Friday? You’ve still got two more chances: Saturday Feb 15 at 7:30PM, and Sunday February 16 at 2 PM. Grab your tickets now, they’ll go fast.

Blend live music + craft beer

The soulful lady trio The Backups, made up of Leslie Sypian, Meredith Best George, and Morgan Ingle, returns to the Livery on Friday, February 14, and will be joined by The Get Downs Rhythm Section featuring Matt Sypian on drums, Nate Sypian on guitar and Dustin Lowe on bass. They’ll be performing plenty of love songs, a few anti-love songs for the bitter hearts in the crowd, and showcasing a few new originals. Doors open at 8:00pm, show starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $10. This show is 21+, under 21 with parent or legal guardian.

YinTimate Yoga

Sometimes the best way to celebrate a day that’s all about love is by focusing inward. The restorative quiet of an ultra-chill, super-calm and reliably un-sweaty Yin Yoga class (you can totally go straight to dinner afterward!) is the perfect way to wind the week down, and YogaLife is offering a special candlelit YINtimate class for Valentine’s Day! This 90-minute class starts at 6:30: stretch solo, or bring your favorite plus-one. Check the schedule or call the studio at 269-281-0910 for more details.
