SUMMARY:Hike on the Dunewood Trace and beyond\, Dunes National Park
DESCRIPTION:arrive late? walk to the campground\, keep to the right\, and you will run into our group. \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \nwe will meet at 12 PM ET\, 11 AM CT. \ndear friends– \nwe will meet at 12 PM ET at the Beverly Shores South Shore line parking lot. though we will not be using the train\, the lot is never full\, and i’ve never heard of anyone’s having problems parking there\, but if you are uneasy about that\, park at the Great Marsh trail lot\, a couple blocks to the north\, and walk to the South Shore parking lot by 12:00. \nnote\, however\, that the Great Marsh parking lot is a fee area\, so you will need a permit to hang on your mirror (you can purchase one at the Marathon station on the corner–but not cheap). \nthere is a washroom at the South Shore train station on Broadway\, north of the tracks. if you use it\, wear a mask. because of construction\, there is a chance that this washroom could be closed. if so\, there is also a washroom at the Marathon station at the corner. \ngetting people together and ready to hike will take a little while\, but let’s be moving by 12:20 ET. \nthis should be a dog-friendly hike\, so you may bring your well-behaved Canine American friends. \nwe will all start out together from the South Shore line parking lot\, cross US 12\, enter the campground\, turn right\, and walk to the trailhead of the Dunewood Trace. \nmake a careful note of HOW TO GET BACK TO YOUR CAR\, cause we may not all be coming back together. \nwe will take a there-and-back hike on the Dunewood Trace starting from the National Park campground. at 2.5 miles\, we will reach the Great Lakes Science Center. there are restrooms there also. \nfor those who wish to turn back there\, you may return the same way we came\, and arrive back at our cars with a total hike of 5 miles. but if you want some variety and about the same distance\, you may cross route 12 and walk north to the Calumet Trail\, turn right and return to the train station by a different way. depending on the weather\, sometimes there is standing water on this gravel trail. \nbut you also may continue west on the Glenwood Dunes trail as far as you want to go\, up to a round trip total of 13 miles. \nif you want to go beyond the Great Lakes center\, take the nature trail west till it ends. the Glenwood Dunes trail will pick up there\, and you may continue west. this is actually a network of trails\, so consult the map\, or take a photo of the sign at the Great Lakes center so you don’t go astray. \ni’m expecting people to self-sort into small groups\, hike as far and as fast as they wish\, and turn back wherever they want. this will eliminate the frequent problem of accommodating people of various hiking abilities and preferences. \ni expect most of us will meet at the Great Lakes center\, where we can check in and regroup\, but we don’t have to. if you’re in your zone\, just continue on at whatever pace you wish\, and turn back when you want to. \nsince we won’t all go the entire distance on this trail\, i encourage you to TAKE and POST pictures. if you don’t know how to post\, please text them to me\, and i will post them for you. i would appreciate if you would drop a comment telling me how far everyone went\, and what you think of the idea of this hike. \nhere is a chart of various turn around points\, and how long your round trip hike will be employing each option: \nto \nGreat Lakes Science Center 5.0 miles\nTeale rd 7.0 miles\nFurnessville rd 8.0 miles\nHadenfelt rd 9.0 miles\nTremont rd 10.4 miles\n50 E rd 11.4 miles \n…and one more route possibility–JONATHAN will have his car parked at the Dune Park train station\, and is making a ONE WAY hike of 6.0 miles from our starting point in Beverly Shores\, and invites anyone who wants to to join him. he will drive them back to their vehicles\, and make more than one trip if necessary. \nMake sure to check the weather on the day of the event and dress appropriately http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301 . Be sure to bring along plenty of water (preferably 2 quarts)\, and a snack which we will eat along the way. \ni will pass a hat for a small donation to cover expenses: mostly\, this is the cost of using the meetup website\, but sometimes I need some dinero to pay for occasional gifts to neighbors who let us use their parking\, prizes for contests\, etc. as long as i can cover this with people putting $2-3 in a can\, i prefer not doing anything more binding or complicated. \nif anyone else wants to organize a restaurant visit\, go ahead\, but regretfully\, i am not comfortable doing it myself yet. i haven’t dined indoors since 2/22/2020. \nif you have symptoms of\, or have recently tested positive for Covid-19 (or any other contagious disease)\, please DO NOT ATTEND. \nalso bring a mask for situations where we might need one (eg\, using a crowded restroom\, or getting a ride in someone else’s car). \nhope to see you there\, \nRick

SUMMARY:Multi-speed Hike at Turkey Run State Park
DESCRIPTION:note: we are meeting at 12 PM EDT (11 AM CDT). for anyone coming from the Chicago or the Calumet Region\, make sure you realize this is about a 3 hour drive each way. from southwest Michigan\, it is probably more like 3.5 hours. \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \ndear friends– \nplease join us for a magnificent hike on some of the best trails in the best state park in Indiana. \nwe will meet in front of the Turkey Run Inn at 12 PM EDT. if you don’t find us\, call me at 773-415-0428\, and hope i have a signal. \nplease check the weather before departure and have appropriate clothing and equipment (http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/47859 ).\nbring along a lunch which we will eat on the trail\, plus enough water (one quart minimum). bring sunscreen if the weather calls for it. insects are seldom a problem at Turkey Run because it is a mature\, climax forest with swiftly running water\, but some are more sensitive than others\, so use your judgement. \ni will pass a hat for a small donation to cover expenses: mostly\, this is the cost of using the meetup website\, but sometimes I need some dinero to pay for occasional gifts to neighbors who let us use their parking\, prizes for contests (at the Survivor Chicago event in June 2004 I gave away a car )\, etc. as long as i can cover this with people putting $2-3 in a can\, i prefer not doing anything more binding or complicated. \nwe will start off on trail 6\, visit Turkey Run Hollow\, then continue around trail 7\, ending up at Sunset Point. \nthen we will continue on trail 1 to the Nature Center. we will look around a while\, and use the restrooms\, then cross the suspension bridge\, and soon be in beautiful Rocky Hollow\, the crown jewel of the park. we will continue up Rocky Hollow to the Punch Bowl\, then continue on trail 3 past the ladders of Bear Hollow\, and up the 140 steps of trail 5. \nat that point\, we will have lunch and a meeting and make decisions. those who have had enough\, may take trail 5 back down to Sugar Creek\, take the rest of trail 3 along the river\, thru the Devil’s Icebox and Ladder rock\, cross the suspension bridge\, and go back on trail 1 to our cars (a significant hike of about 2 extra miles in itself). \nthose who would like to extend the hike another rugged mile longer\, can continue on trail 9\, thru Boulder Canyon and Falls Canyon\, and then take the same route as the others back to the Inn and the cars. \nit’s possible to drive to this hike and back in one day\, but i encourage anyone who wants to make a whole weekend of this event\, to find accommodations at the Turkey Run Inn\, Turkey Run or Shades campgrounds\, or at several private facilities in the area and spend Saturday hiking\, canoeing\, kayaking\, etc in this wonderful natural area. \nhope to see you there\, \nRick

SUMMARY:Chesterton European Market and a Beach Visit in the Dunes National Park
DESCRIPTION:Euro Market starting at 10:15 ET\nbeach at 1:00 ET \nas of Friday evening\, no rain is forecast for Saturday till evening\, but please check this announcement in the morning to make sure out schedule hasn’t changed. \nfor anyone who comes late but hasn’t met us\, Rick will be wearing a blue hat that says “GREECE” on it; Eileen will be wearing a straw hat with a black band. \nthis event is sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \ndear friends– \ni planned to schedule a low key visit to the lakefront on Saturday\, July 1 for one more opportunity to enjoy some beach time at the height of summer. Eileen said she plans to come\, but will be visiting the weekly Chesterton European Market beforehand\, so we decided to combine these two activities into a Saturday event. \nthe European Market https://www.dunelandchamber.org/european-market is a very successful Farmer’s Market+ that occurs in the park in downtown Chesterton every Saturday in the summer and beyond. check the website above for directions and hours. \nEileen will wait near the park bandshell rotunda from 10:15-10:30 ET. if you don’t know her\, look for a friendly woman with a black-banded straw hat. if you come later than that\, or can’t find her\, you may text her at 773-543-0316. \nyou may go to the European Market portion of the event with or without going to the beach afterwards\, and vice versa. \nif you want to go to the beach–whether you’ve been to the Euro Market or not–come to my house at 1:00 ET. \nthe summer parking crunch anywhere near the beach in the Dunes requires that we park at my house for any weekend event\, and the closest beach is the Beverly Shores town beach at Broadway\, a walk of about 3/4 mile. \nwe will meet at my house\, JUST FOR PARKING\, and walk straight down Broadway to Beverly Shores Town Beach\, descend the new town steps\, and set up on the sand for a nice afternoon on the Hoosier Riviera. i have a town parking permit\, so i can drive down with people’s gear\, as long as they can CARRY IT BACK to their CARS If they want to leave before or after i do. \nthere is a restroom and drinking water at Lakeview beach\, a few hundred feet to the west. there are also restrooms at the South Shore station\, and the Marathon gas station on the way in. \nBe sure to check the weather beforehand\, and dress appropriately . bring along some snacks which we will eat at the beach\, plus enough water (one quart minimum)\, a hat with a brim\, sunscreen\, etc. \nmake sure that you KNOW THE WAY BACK TO YOUR CAR\, since we will be leaving on our own time and not as a group. \ni also encourage you all to take and post pictures to the site\, especially if you go to the Market\, since i’m not going. if you don’t know how to post to the site\, text pictures to me\, and i will post them. \nif you have symptoms of\, or have recently tested positive for Covid-19 (or any other contagious disease)\, please DO NOT ATTEND. \nalso bring a mask for situations where we might need one (eg\, using a crowded restroom\, or getting a ride in someone else’s car). \ni look forward to seeing you there for another fun summer together\, \nRick \ndirections & parking instructions: \navoid the intersection of IN 49 & US 12 because of summer traffic jams; go west on US 12; then right onto Broadway (traffic light opposite National Park campground); continue about 3/4 mile\, and turn left at Marne\, go to 11 w Marne–a gray\, three story house set back rather far from the road; street parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores\, but you can park in the off-street spaces across the road from us\, or in front of our neighbor to the east (towards Broadway); pull straight into the spaces and park as close together as you safely can; DO NOT block anyone in! \ndo not park in my driveway unless i tell you to. also do not block my neighbors’ driveways. \nonce you have parked\, come to my front porch and take one of the parking permits there. put it in your car window facing the road. \nif all spaces are taken\, let me know–you will NEED to DRIVE BACK to the South Shore train station parking lot. Erin has graciously volunteered to shuttle people from the train station to my house or to the beach. remember\, you will have a return walk down Broadway of over a mile to the station…but we ARE a hiking group. \nwe will wait till 1:30 ET\, then depart on foot.

SUMMARY:Porter-Brickyard Trail hike for the Vernal Equinox at the National Park
DESCRIPTION:this event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \nmy sources say that as of last weekend\, some parts of the trails here are muddy\, or have water puddles. i would wear boots\, and carry a walking stick. \nif you have trouble parking\, note the huge overflow parking area across the road. \nHiking automatically involve risks from weather\, trail conditions\, even plants and animals. \nwe don’t know your state of health\, or fitness level\, but YOU do\, or should\, so please monitor yourself\, and–for your sake and ours–stay away from events that involve activities with unwanted difficulty\, or an unacceptable risk level. \nmeet near the washrooms at Chellberg Farm at 11 CT\, 12 ET \ndear hiking friends– \ntoday’s hike will start at a familiar trailhead\, but go off in a different direction from the one we usually take. moreover\, we will have three variations of the route so you may choose how far and fast you want to hike. \nyou may go with Rick for an EASY hike of 2.0 miles. this route will be on mostly flat ground at a leisurely pace\, and we will have stops at Chellberg Farm and the Bailly Homestead\, so almost anyone should have minimal difficulty with this hike. \nyou may go with Kathy for a MODERATE hike of 5.7 miles. the pace on this hike will be faster\, with a longer route\, but still mostly level ground. \nor you may go with Eileen for a more RUGGED hike of 7.1 miles\, with a faster pace\, and 2 steep climbs over loose sand with some uneven terrain\, and treacherous tree roots on one descent in particular. \nyou don’t need to decide on your selection till we come to the departure junctions\, but for your sake and ours\, don’t take a route that is beyond your abilities. \nplease check the weather before departure and have appropriate clothing and equipment [https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US](https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US) . bring along a lunch which we will eat on the trail\, plus enough water (one quart minimum).\nremember\, this is a fee area–you must DISPLAY A PERMIT to park here–\nhttps://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/fees.htm \ni will pass a hat for a small donation to cover expenses: mostly\, this is the cost of using the meetup website\, but sometimes I have other expenses. as long as i can cover this with people putting $2-3 in a can\, i prefer not doing anything more binding or complicated. \nif you have symptoms of\, or have recently tested positive for Covid-19 (or any other contagious disease)\, please DO NOT ATTEND. \nmake sure you know where your car is parked\, in case you want to turn back at any point. \ni also encourage you all to take and post pictures to meetup. i ask this particularly because we won’t all be taking the same route. \nwe will gather near the restrooms off the parking lot\, and wait till 11:20 CT for all to arrive. then we will turn right at the valley’s edge and walk a short distance till we come to the Chellberg Farm.\nthis is a preserved farmstead owned by Swedish immigrants\, and run in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. there are animals in the farmyard and the barn. \nafter that\, we will ascend some bridges and stairs up a streambed till we come to the Porter-Brickyard Trail\, opened in 2012. there you may turn left and go with me\, Rick. \nwe will follow the Porter-Brickyard trail down a gradual wooded slope into the river valley\, make a left at Howe road\, and arrive at the canoe ramp on the Little Calumet river\, where we will see the spooky antique iron gates of some home that used to stand at that location. \nthen we will tarry a bit at the Bailly Homestead\, with preserved buildings covering about a century of construction from the family of fur trapper-trader Joseph Bailly and his descendants. we will look around for a while\, then arrive back at the parking lot shortly\, for a total day’s hike of 2.0 miles. \n…or\, when we reach the Porter-Brickyard trail you may go right\, with Eileen and Kathy\, and take the trail through the woods\, and over the elaborate steel bridge that crosses US 12. \nat the Greenbelt trailhead\, we will turn west\, and cross the narrow causeway between some small ponds and Cowles Bog; we will continue a ways on the boundary between the prairie and forest\, till we come to another trail junction\, where you may go right with Kathy on a loop around the edge of the bog\, for a total day’s hike of 5.7 miles. \n…or you may continue left with Eileen\, down some steep dunes to the lakefront\, up another dune and back for a total day’s hike of 7.1 miles. \nwhichever route you choose\, we hope to see you there\, \nRick \ndirections:\nfrom US 12\, turn south on Mineral Springs rd\, or from US 20\, turn north on Mineral Springs rd; enter the parking lot marked “Chellberg Farm”; if the parking lot is full\, there is ample overflow parking across the road; try to arrive by 12:00; we will wait till 12:20\, then depart on foot.

SUMMARY:Hike on the Dunewood Trace and beyond\, Dunes National Park
DESCRIPTION:this event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \narrive late? walk to the campground\, keep to the right\, on the road and then the trail (the sign is hidden behind the dumpster!)\, and you will run into our group. \nwe will meet at 1 PM ET\, 12 PM CT. \ndear friends– \nwe will meet at 1 PM ET at the Beverly Shores South Shore line parking lot. though we will not be using the train\, the lot is never full\, and i’ve never heard of anyone’s having problems parking there\, but if you are uneasy about that\, park at the Great Marsh trail lot\, a couple blocks to the north\, and walk to the South Shore parking lot by 1:00. \ngetting people together and ready to hike will take a little while\, but let’s be moving by 1:20 ET. \nthis should be a dog-friendly hike\, so you may bring your well-behaved\, leashed Canine American friends–except that if you will need a ride to get back to your car\, make arrangements ahead of time. \nthis hike will have several options: you may take a there-and-back hike on the Dunewood Trace starting from the National Park campground. at 2.5 miles\, we will reach the Great Lakes Science Center. there are restrooms there also. \nfor those who wish to turn back there\, you may return the same way we came\, and arrive back at our cars with a total hike of 5 miles. but if you want some variety and about the same distance\, you may cross route 12 and walk north to the Calumet Trail\, turn right and return to the train station by a different way. caution–depending on the weather\, sometimes there is standing water on this gravel trail. \nbut you also may continue west on the Glenwood Dunes trail. if you would like to hike the entire length of the greater Glenwood Dunes trail\, JONATHAN will have his car parked at the Dune Park train station\, and is leading a ONE WAY hike of 6.0 miles from our starting point. he will drive people back to their vehicles in Beverly Shores\, and make more than one trip if necessary. \nif you hike beyond the Great Lakes center\, take the nature trail west till it ends. the Glenwood Dunes trail will pick up there\, and you may continue west. this is actually a network of trails\, so consult the map\, or take a photo of the sign at the Great Lakes center so you don’t go astray. if you go with Jonathan\, he knows the way. \ni’m expecting people to self-sort into small groups\, hike as far and as fast as they wish\, and turn back wherever they want. this will eliminate the frequent problem of accommodating people of various hiking abilities and preferences. \nMake sure to check the weather on the day of the event and dress appropriately\nhttp://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301 . \nif you have symptoms of\, or have recently tested positive for Covid-19 (or any other contagious disease)\, please DO NOT ATTEND. \nalso bring a mask for situations where we might need one (eg\, using a crowded restroom\, or getting a ride in someone else’s car). \nto view photos from previous hikes at this location\, see \n2022 https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/photos/31761896/ \n2023 https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/events/291623347/ \nhope to see you there\, \nRick

SUMMARY:A Hike and Swim at Warren Dunes
DESCRIPTION:This event starts at 12:00 pm ET (Michigan time) which is 11:00 am CT (Chicago time). because of the expected difficulty entering the park and parking\, expect that the hike will set off at 12:30 ET. \nbecause of the popularity of this park on summer weekends\, there could be extensive parking delays. if you can contact the organizers\, let them know if you will be late\, but they are aware\, and will give some latitude for this. \nif you are way late\, you might want to follow the instructions below for walking north on the beach and meeting the group when they descend to the shore. \ndear friends– \nThis hike is at Warren Dunes state park in Michigan. We had good times here in 2015\, 2016\, 2017\, 2019\, and 2022! So we expect a good time here in 2024. \nthis hike will be a collaboration among Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group [https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/](https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/) \, and several other groups\, including \nSouthwest Michigan Friends [https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-yjezdrty/](https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-yjezdrty/) \nWabash Valley Hiking & Social Group https://www.meetup.com/wabash-valley-hiking-social-meetup-group/ \nthere is a gate fee to enter the park\, so be prepared. i believe it is about $10 for out of state per vehicle\, not sure what it is for in state. \nBe sure to check the weather beforehand\, and dress appropriately [https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/warren-dunes-state-park/49125/weather-forecast/30155_poi](https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/warren-dunes-state-park/49125/weather-forecast/30155_poi) . bring along a lunch which we will eat on the beach\, plus enough water (one quart minimum)\, a hat with a brim\, sunscreen\, etc. we will be both in the woods and on the beach\, and i’m not sure what conditions are like this time of year\, so make your own decisions about insect repellent. \nwe will meet at the farthest north parking lot\, near the washrooms. at that point\, we will discuss whether everyone wants to take the entire hike\, or if some would rather skip the inland part of the route and spend more time on the beach. \nthe hike route will be about 5 miles with at least 2-3 steep climbs. we will walk inland over Mt Randall\, and turn north and hike along Painterville Creek\, past the campground\, to the junction with the Blue Jay trail\, then we will descend to the lakefront on the Blue Jay trail with a spectacular view of the Lake\, before arriving at the shore. \nonce at the shore\, we will make an extended stop to swim\, hang out at the beach\, and eat our lunch. after that\, we walk about a mile along the beach back to the parking lot. \nif anyone would like a shorter hike and more beach time\, they may walk north along the beach about one mile\, and stop where the Blue Jay trail emerges from inland and hits the lakefront\, where the other hikers will end up after the inland part of the hike. watch from the point where a rather wide trail comes down to the beach\, just before the end of the park\, where lakefront houses will begin\, and boats may be pulled up in the shallow water. \nthe shorter route\, just from the parking area to the swim stop and back is about 2 miles round trip. \nat the swim stop\, we can discuss whether anyone wants to go into Sawyer to have dinner or visit the garden center and fruit market there. \nhope to see you\, \nErin and Erica \ndirections to Warren Dunes state park: \ntake 1-94 to Sawyer rd exit\, turn east; take Sawyer rd to Red Arrow hwy\, turn right; continue to Warren Dunes state park entrance\, turn left; continue on State Park rd to last parking lot\, park there; look for a crowd\, or call me at 773-415-0428; try to arrive by 12:00 PM EDT (11:00 AM CDT); we will wait till 12:30 EDT\, then depart on foot.

SUMMARY:Stray Dog Lunch and a Walk to the Beach\, New Buffalo\, Michigan
DESCRIPTION:The Stray Dog officially opens at 12 ET\, but if there are people waiting at the door\, they will sometimes open 10-20 minutes earlier than that. so that we are able to sit together at this popular location\, i’d like to be there when they actually open the doors. \nto find our group if you haven’t met me\, i will be wearing a crimson hat that says “Easthampton MA” on it. \ndear friends– \nwe invite you to lunch at the rooftop garden of the ever popular Stray Dog in New Buffalo\, Michigan\, 245 N Whittaker St\, 269-469-2727\, https://thestraydog.com/2014/5/13/8h845ri6vpn89heud2mz0sdso2bbn5 \nwe will enjoy a pleasant lunch together\, then take a short walk through the harbor area and down to the beach\, weather permitting. \nto make things run more smoothly\, I strongly recommend that you have enough cash to pay the bill: some restaurants don’t like splitting up credit card charges. \nwe try to get separate checks when possible\, but if not\, just figure what your order cost (don’t forget beverages\, desserts\, and your share of appetizers)\, add about 1/3 of your total for tax and tip\, and contribute it to the pot. \nIf you have a coupon you’d like to use at this or any other dinner\, please check with me first. If I have a coupon for the whole group to use\, and there is a limit of one per table\, the group coupon will take priority. If not\, feel free to use yours. \nif you have symptoms of\, or have recently tested positive for Covid-19 (or any other contagious disease)\, please DO NOT ATTEND. \nif you are just coming for lunch\, park in their (rather limited) lot. if you’d like to join in the walk down to the lakefront\, i suggest you come slightly early\, and **park** on one of the **side streets** off the “main drag” (Whittaker st)\, where parking is abundant and without restriction as long as you’re ok walking a few blocks (hey\, we are a hiking group). \nafter lunch\, Kathy will lead the group over the bridge\, past the harbor\, and out to the town beach. from there\, we can hang out on the shore\, wade or swim\, or hike on the beach ridge a short distance. \nas of the last time we visited here in 2019\, there was no walk-in fee to use the beach\, though i can’t guarantee what we will find now. \nwe hope to see you there\, \nRick and Kathy

SUMMARY:Lunch at Ghost Isle Brewery\, walk at Galien River Park\, and an exciting new idea
DESCRIPTION:Ghost Isle Brewery officially opens at 12 ET\, but if there are people waiting at the door\, they will sometimes open 10-20 minutes earlier than that. so that we are able to sit together at this popular location\, i’d like to be there when they actually open the doors. \nto find our group if you haven’t met me\, i will be wearing a crimson hat that says “Easthampton MA” on it. \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Northern Indiana Adventures https://www.meetup.com/northern-indiana-adventures/ . \nthis will be an all-weather event–if the weather is bad\, we will just skip the hike part. \ndear friends– \ncome join us for a Saturday lunch at Ghost Isle Brewery https://www.ghostislebrewery.com/ \, followed by a short walk at Galien River County Park–that’s the one with the cool observation tower. https://www.berriencounty.org/1297/Galien-River-County-Park \nto make things run more smoothly\, I strongly recommend that you have enough cash to pay the bill: some restaurants don’t like splitting up credit card charges. \nwe try to get separate checks when possible\, but if not\, just figure what your order cost (don’t forget beverages\, desserts\, and your share of appetizers)\, add about 1/3 of your total for tax and tip\, and contribute it to the pot. \nIf you have a coupon you’d like to use at this or any other meal\, please check with me first. If I have a coupon for the whole group to use\, and there is a limit of one per table\, the group coupon will take priority. If not\, feel free to use yours. \nafter lunch\, for those who want a short hike ending in a great observation post\, we drive a few miles to Galien River County Park. \ndirections from Ghost Isle to Galien River Park: \ngo east on US 12; when US 12 turns right\, go straight instead onto the Red Arrow hwy; go about a mile\, and turn into the Galien River Park lot on the left (opposite the township offices). \nwe’ve invited both the Southwest Michigan Friends\, and the Northern Indiana Adventures groups to this event\, to introduce the possibility that the two groups may merge in the coming months\, partly due to the relatively high cost of belonging to meetup\, and the fact that the two groups have considerably overlapping memberships\, and overlapping venues for events. \nseveral names have been suggested for the new combined group\, but Michiana Melting Pot has been an idea at least for a working title. \nif you’re only coming for the walk\, i imagine we will meet at the park about 1:30 ET or so. call me a bit before that and i can give you a better start time. remember\, this is not a serious hike\, just a short walk after lunch ending up at an impressive observation tower.. \nhope to see you\, and bon appetit\, \nRick

SUMMARY:Group Updates
DESCRIPTION:* **This is not an actual event but an announcement for the upcoming changes. I wrote this for the NIA group but will share here so we have a cross over.**\n*\n* We are in the process of merging Northern Indiana Adventures and Southwest Michigan Friends groups into one group. We will be the same as we have been but the NIA group will dissolve. There are two reasons for this:\n* firstly\, Rick has been looking for someone to take the lead in the SMF group\n* and secondly\, I would like to make this meetup group completely free. That means no fees\, no fundraiser\, and no asking for money. \nRick will remain the organizer in the new group because it is typically his group but Stasia and I will be doing a majority of the organizing.\nOn meetup\, if you pay for an organizer subscription\, you can have three different groups– so Rick is letting us co-organize his 3rd group.\nAnyone who is already an NIA event organizer will be made event organizers in the new group which will be called **[Michiana Adventures](https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-yjezdrty)**.\nYou may already be a MEMBER — check or JOIN here NOW! [https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-yjezdrty](https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-yjezdrty)\nThis process will take the next few months and we should be one Ahhh-mazing group **by Jan 6th**. We have had a lot of wonderful adventures in the NIA group\, and I look forward to even more in the coming years.\n**If there are any photos here that you really like and have not saved\, I would save them 😊**\n*If you have any ideas for an event you would be interested in hosting\, please let me or Stasia know. We are always open to giving your creative ideas a stage. The adventures are open to any type of event that you enjoy\, not just fitness and nature. There are just a few simple guidelines.*\nWe have a **[breakfast scheduled Sept 14th](https://www.meetup.com/northern-indiana-adventures/events/302473686/?utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=share-btn_savedevents_share_modal&utm_source=link) click link to join us!** if you would like to chat about new possibilities. I’m adding a walk to that breakfast because the East Race is right there. Or if you have any questions or input\, you can comment here.

When I look at photos of my mom in the 1950s and 60s\, it was such a LOVELY time!! Pretty dresses\, pumps & lotsa hairspray and happy smiles all around\, hahahah. \n**Anyways\, if this sounds fun\, RSVP** and start sorting thru your closet or find a good thrift store with some fun clothes!! \n*This will be primarily a drinkies and enjoying good music event\, so eat a hearty alcohol-soaking-up meal beforehand!* \nPS this is not about getting “alcohol-messy”\, just a a bit tipsy\, having some glam-fun and being safe – so all three places are within “higher heels” walking distance. **CARPOOL if you can!!** \nONLY RULE: BE kind and get to know EVERYONE!!

SUMMARY:Harold Zisla: Artistic Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Zisla was a wonderful artist and teacher. We can meet at the gallery to explore the show\, then go to lunch afterwards. \nThis exhibition showcases a selection of Harold Zisla’s paintings from the permanent collections of the South Bend Museum of Art\, Indiana University South Bend’s Raclin School of the Arts\, Temple Beth-El in South Bend\, and several private collectors. The exhibit spans Zisla’s prolific career from the 1950s until shortly before his passing in 2016 at the age of 90\, offering a comprehensive look at his artistic evolution from realistic portraiture to abstract imagery.\nVisitors will have the opportunity to engage with Zisla’s work\, which is renowned for its creativity\, intensity\, complexity\, and emotional depth. The exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the artist’s development and invites viewers to experience the essence of Harold Zisla through his art.\n“The South Bend Jewish community was an essential part of my parents’ lives\, beginning when Harold and Doreen moved to the area in 1951 until my mother died in 2021\,” says Paul Zisla\, Harold’s son. “The Jewish Federation’s sponsorship of this exhibition\, honoring Harold’s contributions to the artistic life of the community\, holds deep significance. Much the same can be said about the participation and support of the South Bend Museum of Art and Indiana University South Bend.”\nThe exhibition will be open to the public from September 16 through December 13\, 2024\, Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM\, at the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley\, located at 3202 Shalom Way in South Bend. SUMMARY:Warren Dunes Hike
DESCRIPTION:We will go for an afternoon hike at Warren Dunes state park on the shores of Lake Michigan. \nThis is about a 5 mile hike. It is a bit more difficult with the dunes but the pace will be moderate. We can start with the trail entrance off the beach\, take that to trail 4\, then take trail 13 down to the beach. There we can take a walk along the beach back towards the parking lot at whatever pace you prefer. I usually like to spend sometime on the beach.\nWe can go for a bit to eat after. \nWe can meet in or near the northernmost parking lot. They may have the north parking lots closed\, so we wil meet in the available open parking lot. There is usually a $11 entrance fee.\nWe will be meeting at Sawyer Garden Center 15 minutes earlier and carpool in. We have a couple people with park passes so you have the option to meet earlier and carpool in or meet at the park. Either is fine. Understand that the garden center is wonderful! If you think you might like to look around before we head over\, plan for that and give yourself plenty of time.
