DESCRIPTION:Ghost Isle Brewery officially opens at 12 ET\, but if there are people waiting at the door\, they will sometimes open 10-20 minutes earlier than that. so that we are able to sit together at this popular location\, i’d like to be there when they actually open the doors. \nto find our group if you haven’t met me\, i will be wearing a crimson hat that says “Easthampton MA” on it. \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Northern Indiana Adventures https://www.meetup.com/northern-indiana-adventures/ . \nthis will be an all-weather event–if the weather is bad\, we will just skip the hike part. \ndear friends– \ncome join us for a Saturday lunch at Ghost Isle Brewery https://www.ghostislebrewery.com/ \, followed by a short walk at Galien River County Park–that’s the one with the cool observation tower. https://www.berriencounty.org/1297/Galien-River-County-Park \nto make things run more smoothly\, I strongly recommend that you have enough cash to pay the bill: some restaurants don’t like splitting up credit card charges. \nwe try to get separate checks when possible\, but if not\, just figure what your order cost (don’t forget beverages\, desserts\, and your share of appetizers)\, add about 1/3 of your total for tax and tip\, and contribute it to the pot. \nIf you have a coupon you’d like to use at this or any other meal\, please check with me first. If I have a coupon for the whole group to use\, and there is a limit of one per table\, the group coupon will take priority. If not\, feel free to use yours. \nafter lunch\, for those who want a short hike ending in a great observation post\, we drive a few miles to Galien River County Park. \ndirections from Ghost Isle to Galien River Park: \ngo east on US 12; when US 12 turns right\, go straight instead onto the Red Arrow hwy; go about a mile\, and turn into the Galien River Park lot on the left (opposite the township offices). \nwe’ve invited both the Southwest Michigan Friends\, and the Northern Indiana Adventures groups to this event\, to introduce the possibility that the two groups may merge in the coming months\, partly due to the relatively high cost of belonging to meetup\, and the fact that the two groups have considerably overlapping memberships\, and overlapping venues for events. \nseveral names have been suggested for the new combined group\, but Michiana Melting Pot has been an idea at least for a working title. \nif you’re only coming for the walk\, i imagine we will meet at the park about 1:30 ET or so. call me a bit before that and i can give you a better start time. remember\, this is not a serious hike\, just a short walk after lunch ending up at an impressive observation tower.. \nhope to see you\, and bon appetit\, \nRick

DESCRIPTION:* **This is not an actual event but an announcement for the upcoming changes. I wrote this for the NIA group but will share here so we have a cross over.**\n*\n* We are in the process of merging Northern Indiana Adventures and Southwest Michigan Friends groups into one group. We will be the same as we have been but the NIA group will dissolve. There are two reasons for this:\n* firstly\, Rick has been looking for someone to take the lead in the SMF group\n* and secondly\, I would like to make this meetup group completely free. That means no fees\, no fundraiser\, and no asking for money. \nRick will remain the organizer in the new group because it is typically his group but Stasia and I will be doing a majority of the organizing.\nOn meetup\, if you pay for an organizer subscription\, you can have three different groups– so Rick is letting us co-organize his 3rd group.\nAnyone who is already an NIA event organizer will be made event organizers in the new group which will be called **[Michiana Adventures](https://www.meetup.com/meetup-group-yjezdrty)**.\nYou may already be a MEMBER — check or JOIN here NOW! Once around is 2.5 miles.\nThere are a few nice places to eat if you would like to go have a bite. I won’t be able to go to eat after. \nThis is a pet friendly hike.

Bring a nice little picnic and whatever else will make you comfy on the beach while enjoying the water and surroundings\n2. We will wander the beach searching for two handfuls of interesting bits of shell\, wood\, etc…\, as well as any quiet chitchat that you wish to enjoy with others.\n3. We will create our own little “temporary” art display on the beach in meditation of Mama Earth’s provision of beauty for us to create more beauty with. If it is warm\, lake frolicing is optional.\n4. We will choose from three cards each from an assortment of a “power” deck of oracle cards (I have a dozen to choose from\, or you may bring your own!). The cards represent past\, present\, and the next 90 days in the future for guidance thru the transition of summer to autumn.\n5. We will enjoy our self-created picnics and bevvies in a circle as we share whatever we wish to share about our discoveries this day or any other.\n6. We can meet at the gallery to explore the show\, then go to lunch afterwards. \nThis exhibition showcases a selection of Harold Zisla’s paintings from the permanent collections of the South Bend Museum of Art\, Indiana University South Bend’s Raclin School of the Arts\, Temple Beth-El in South Bend\, and several private collectors. The exhibit spans Zisla’s prolific career from the 1950s until shortly before his passing in 2016 at the age of 90\, offering a comprehensive look at his artistic evolution from realistic portraiture to abstract imagery.\nVisitors will have the opportunity to engage with Zisla’s work\, which is renowned for its creativity\, intensity\, complexity\, and emotional depth. The exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the artist’s development and invites viewers to experience the essence of Harold Zisla through his art.\n“The South Bend Jewish community was an essential part of my parents’ lives\, beginning when Harold and Doreen moved to the area in 1951 until my mother died in 2021\,” says Paul Zisla\, Harold’s son. “The Jewish Federation’s sponsorship of this exhibition\, honoring Harold’s contributions to the artistic life of the community\, holds deep significance. SUMMARY:Warren Dunes Hike
DESCRIPTION:We will go for an afternoon hike at Warren Dunes state park on the shores of Lake Michigan. \nThis is about a 5 mile hike. It is a bit more difficult with the dunes but the pace will be moderate. We can start with the trail entrance off the beach\, take that to trail 4\, then take trail 13 down to the beach. There we can take a walk along the beach back towards the parking lot at whatever pace you prefer. I usually like to spend sometime on the beach.\nWe can go for a bit to eat after. \nWe can meet in or near the northernmost parking lot. They may have the north parking lots closed\, so we wil meet in the available open parking lot. There is usually a $11 entrance fee.\nWe will be meeting at Sawyer Garden Center 15 minutes earlier and carpool in. We have a couple people with park passes so you have the option to meet earlier and carpool in or meet at the park. Either is fine. Understand that the garden center is wonderful! If you think you might like to look around before we head over\, plan for that and give yourself plenty of time.

SUMMARY:Warren Dunes Hike
DESCRIPTION:We will do this hike again since it’s a favorite. ✌️ afternoon hike at Warren Dunes state park on the shores of Lake Michigan. \nThis is about a 5 mile hike. It is a bit more difficult with the dunes but the pace will be moderate. We can start with the trail entrance off the beach\, take that to trail 4\, then take trail 8 down to the beach. There we can take a walk along the beach back towards the parking lot at whatever pace you prefer. I usually like to spend sometime on the beach. \nWe will be meeting at Sawyer Garden Center 15 minutes earlier and carpool in. Understand that the garden center is wonderful! If you think you might like to look around before we head over\, plan for that and give yourself plenty of time. If you are meeting us at the park\, understand that we may be a few minutes after 12 so you may have to wait for us. We can meet you near the pavilion at the northernmost parking lot that is open. They typically have only one parking lot open this time of year. My phone goes into sos mode\, so I won’t be able to receive any comments when we are at the lake.\nPlease update your RSVP and remember to be kind and patient.\nWe can go out to eat after but anymore\, restaurants are so loud it takes away from the experience for me. So I’ll probably bow out of that.
