SUMMARY:A Hike and Swim at Warren Dunes
DESCRIPTION:This event starts at 12:00 pm ET (Michigan time) which is 11:00 am CT (Chicago time). because of the expected difficulty entering the park and parking\, expect that the hike will set off at 12:30 ET. \nbecause of the popularity of this park on summer weekends\, there could be extensive parking delays. if you can contact the organizers\, let them know if you will be late\, but they are aware\, and will give some latitude for this. \nif you are way late\, you might want to follow the instructions below for walking north on the beach and meeting the group when they descend to the shore. \ndear friends– \nThis hike is at Warren Dunes state park in Michigan. We had good times here in 2015\, 2016\, 2017\, 2019\, 2022\, and 2024\, so i hope we’ll a good time here in 2025. \nthis hike will be a collaboration with several other groups\, including \nRick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/ \nWabash Valley Hiking & Social Group [https://www.meetup.com/wabash-valley-hiking-social-meetup-group/](https://www.meetup.com/wabash-valley-hiking-social-meetup-group/) \nthere is a gate fee to enter the park\, so be prepared. i believe it is about $10 for out of state per vehicle\, not sure what it is for in state. \nBe sure to check the weather beforehand\, and dress appropriately [https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/warren-dunes-state-park/49125/weather-forecast/30155_poi](https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/warren-dunes-state-park/49125/weather-forecast/30155_poi) . \nbring along a lunch which we will eat on the beach\, plus enough water (one quart minimum)\, a hat with a brim\, sunscreen\, etc. we will be both in the woods and on the beach\, and i’m not sure what conditions are like this time of year\, so make your own decisions about insect repellent. \nwe will meet at the farthest north parking lot\, near the washrooms. at that point\, we will discuss whether everyone wants to take the entire hike\, or if some would rather skip the inland part of the route and spend more time on the beach. \nthe hike route will be about 5 miles with at least 2-3 steep climbs. we will walk inland over Mt Randall\, and turn north and hike along Painterville Creek\, past the campground\, to the junction with the Blue Jay trail\, then we will descend to the lakefront on the Blue Jay trail with a spectacular view of the Lake\, before arriving at the shore. \nonce at the shore\, we will make an extended stop to swim\, hang out at the beach\, and eat our lunch. after that\, we walk about a mile along the beach back to the parking lot. \nif anyone would like a shorter hike and more beach time\, they may walk north along the beach about one mile\, and stop where the Blue Jay trail emerges from inland and hits the lakefront\, where the other hikers will end up after the inland part of the hike. watch from the point where a rather wide trail comes down to the beach\, just before the end of the park\, where lakefront houses begin\, and boats may be pulled up in the shallow water. \nthe shorter route\, just from the parking area to the swim stop and back is about 2 miles round trip. \nat the swim stop\, we can discuss whether anyone wants to go into nearby Sawyer to have dinner and/or visit the garden center and fruit market there. \nhope to see you\, \nErin and Rick \nfor past events at this location: \n2024 [https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/photos/34234329/](https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/photos/34234329/) \ndirections to Warren Dunes state park: \ntake 1-94 to Sawyer rd exit\, turn east; take Sawyer rd to Red Arrow hwy\, turn right; continue to Warren Dunes state park entrance\, turn left; continue on State Park rd to last parking lot\, park there; look for a crowd\, or call me at 773-415-0428; try to arrive by 12:00 PM EDT (11:00 AM CDT); we will wait till 12:30 EDT\, then depart on foot.

Fabric that you like.\nI will get a list of all supplies needed soon and ideas of what you might like to add into your journal.\nWe may need to get together another day to bind it together with twine due to dry time but we’ll figure it out. \n**Book binding cost:**\nPaper 10 sheets 1.50\, 20 for 3.00\nCardboard 4 sheets 2.00\nRice paper 4 sheets for .50\nGlue\, needle\, thread\, bone tool 2.00 \nThe size we will be making is 8.5” x 5.5”. We can walk over there if we feel like it.  \nYou will go to Dorr rd off of State Route 933. If gps trys to take you another way\, don’t take it. Take 933 to the WNDU station\, Dorr Rd is that light. Turn and drive until you get to the gate\, park in the south parking lot.

SUMMARY:Kayak Trip Down the St Joe River
DESCRIPTION:We can meet at St Pats park and going kayaking. The shuttle takes us to Keller park boat launch area go a 4 mile/ 3 hour float. This is their short trip. \nWe can bring a lunch and eat at St Pats park for either trip. \nIf you are renting it is $30 plus a $50 refundable deposit on the vessel. Cash might be easiest and they might require it. \nhttps://sjcparks.org/DocumentCenter/View/3458/Canoe-Group-Reservation-Packet-PDF \nIf you have your own kayak it is $15 for the shuttle for you and your kayak. Or we can meet and drop off at Keller Park boat launch and shuttle our cars to St Pats. It would just be the entrance fee. I believe it would help for some of us to do this because their shuttle only fits 18 people. Most who say they are coming will probably not so we might be fine. But if anyone wants to meet at the boat launch at 10:45\, we can shuttle cars over to the park.

DESCRIPTION:A local grassroots arts and music festival South Bend. Set back into the woods. They have been located in this spot since the festival start so the art weaves through the woods. We did this last year and had an amazing time. DESCRIPTION:note: my wife is recovering from a recent knee replacement\, and does not want to be disturbed\, so please use the restroom and fill up with water before you get to our house. \nthere are **restrooms** at the **Marathon** station or the **South Shore** train station at the corner of Broadway & US 12 coming in. there are also modern restrooms at **Lakeview Beach**\, which we will pass walking to Derby Creek Beach. we thank you for your consideration. \nif you arrive late\, park at my house in the spaces mentioned below only; then walk back to Broadway\, and turn left; walk down to Lake Front dr\, turn left again\, and walk to the dip in the road till you see my blue golf cart parked\, then come down to the beach on the “open trail” at the far end of that mini-lot\, and look for us on the shore (probably to the right). i will be wearing a faded blue hat that says “GREECE” on it. \nThis event is being held jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group\nhttps://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/ \ndear friends– \nthough summer’s days are numbered this year\, it looks like we will have one more chance for a day at the beach this coming weekend\, so let’s go for it! \nfor those who would want a hike as well as\, or instead of beach time\, **Rhonda** will lead a walk west into the state park.\nwe will park at my house\, and walk about 3/4 mile because. i can carry people’s gear to the beach on our golf cart\, and give a ride to up to three people. \nbe sure to check the weather beforehand\, and dress appropriately. [http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301](http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/Beverly+Shores+IN+46301) \, which\, i imagine will be a swimsuit and flip-flops so you can go in the water\, which is now in the mid 70’s. it is a bit rocky entering the Lake\, so you might want to bring water shoes. \nbring along some food which we will eat at the beach\, plus enough water (one quart minimum)\, a hat with a brim\, sunscreen\, etc.\nabout a quarter mile to the east\, at Lakeview Beach\, there are modern restrooms and drinking water\, but bring your own water with\, because it is a bit of a hike. \nhope to see you there\, \nRick\ndirections & parking instructions: \navoid the intersection of IN 49 & US 12 because of summer traffic jams; take IN 49 north to US 20; go east; turn left on CR 300 E (Kemil rd)\, then right on US 12\, then left onto Broadway (traffic light opposite National Park campground); continue about 3/4 mile\, and turn left at Marne\, go to 11 w Marne–a gray\, three story house set back rather far from the road.\nstreet parking is not allowed in Beverly Shores\, but you can park in the off-street spaces across the road from us\, and in front of the house to the east of us (towards Broadway); pull straight into the spaces and park as close together as you safely can; DO NOT block anyone in\, or block any driveways! \ndo not park in my driveway unless i tell you to. \nonce you have parked\, come to my front porch and take one of the parking permits there. put it in your car window facing the road.\nif all spaces are taken\, call me at 773-415-0428.

Traveling east on US 20\, the bog is located just after the curve\, on the south side\, a bit past Quince Rd. There is a large sign. 😊 \nThis is a family friendly hike\, kids and dogs are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Start time is 2p ET\, 1pm CT \nnote: my wife is recovering from a recent knee replacement\, and does not want to be disturbed\, so please use the restroom and fill up with water before you get to our house. \nthere are **restrooms** at the **Marathon** station or the **South Shore** train station at the corner of Broadway & US 12 coming in. there are also modern restrooms at **Lakeview Beach**\, which is about a block to the west of our starting point at Broadway Beach. we thank you for your consideration. \nwe are really just using my house for parking. \nThis event is being held jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group\nhttps://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/ \ndear friends– \nwe invite you in these precious lingering days of summer to a pleasant afternoon on the beach\, in an exciting new land that did not exist as little as three weeks ago. \ni went down to Broadway Beach last Thursday for a walk and a swim\, and started going east from the stairs. as i approached the iron seawall that was the limit of the sand as late as last month\, i was astonished to see more beach ahead of me as far as i could see! \ni went farther\, stopping a couple times for a refreshing swim in the 72 degree waters\, till i came to this decade’s prior eastern beach limit\, and still more beach stretched ahead of me till a rock outcrop blocked my farther view. \ni haven’t explored beyond yet … but that’s what we will do on next week’s hike. i will go with till the first seawall\, where we will stop for a swim and some conversation on the flatish\, semi-comfortable rocks with natural shade even at midday … and after that Rhonda will lead you into the semi-unknown! \nwe will continue east to see how long the new beach lasts\, and if there are any reasonable ways to get up to the road from there\, then we will return either on a loop with the road\, or back along the beach whence we came to Broadway Beach\, then to our vehicles\, and an early dinner at **The Goblin and the Grocer** [http://www.goblinandthegrocer.com/](http://www.goblinandthegrocer.com/) in beautiful downtown Beverly Shores. \nbe sure to check the weather beforehand\, and dress appropriately.
