DESCRIPTION:We will meet down by the boat launch in the parking lot. When you enter the park\, turn right and stay on that road until you see the canoe rental building and the parking lot. You can only enter the park off of Auten Rd. Be aware if your gps takes you into Michigan\, you are going the wrong way. The parking lot is next to the river.\nThere is typically no charge to enter the park.\nWe will start with a hike through Madeline Bertrand then St Pats. SUMMARY:Harold Zisla: Artistic Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Zisla was a wonderful artist and teacher. We can meet at the gallery to explore the show\, then go to lunch afterwards. \nThis exhibition showcases a selection of Harold Zisla’s paintings from the permanent collections of the South Bend Museum of Art\, Indiana University South Bend’s Raclin School of the Arts\, Temple Beth-El in South Bend\, and several private collectors. The exhibit spans Zisla’s prolific career from the 1950s until shortly before his passing in 2016 at the age of 90\, offering a comprehensive look at his artistic evolution from realistic portraiture to abstract imagery.\nVisitors will have the opportunity to engage with Zisla’s work\, which is renowned for its creativity\, intensity\, complexity\, and emotional depth. The exhibit provides a unique glimpse into the artist’s development and invites viewers to experience the essence of Harold Zisla through his art.\n“The South Bend Jewish community was an essential part of my parents’ lives\, beginning when Harold and Doreen moved to the area in 1951 until my mother died in 2021\,” says Paul Zisla\, Harold’s son. “The Jewish Federation’s sponsorship of this exhibition\, honoring Harold’s contributions to the artistic life of the community\, holds deep significance. Much the same can be said about the participation and support of the South Bend Museum of Art and Indiana University South Bend.”\nThe exhibition will be open to the public from September 16 through December 13\, 2024\, Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 3 PM\, at the Jewish Federation of St. Joseph Valley\, located at 3202 Shalom Way in South Bend. SUMMARY:Warren Dunes Hike
DESCRIPTION:We will go for an afternoon hike at Warren Dunes state park on the shores of Lake Michigan. \nThis is about a 5 mile hike. It is a bit more difficult with the dunes but the pace will be moderate. We can start with the trail entrance off the beach\, take that to trail 4\, then take trail 13 down to the beach. There we can take a walk along the beach back towards the parking lot at whatever pace you prefer. I usually like to spend sometime on the beach.\nWe can go for a bit to eat after. \nWe can meet in or near the northernmost parking lot. They may have the north parking lots closed\, so we wil meet in the available open parking lot. There is usually a $11 entrance fee.\nWe will be meeting at Sawyer Garden Center 15 minutes earlier and carpool in. We have a couple people with park passes so you have the option to meet earlier and carpool in or meet at the park. Either is fine. Understand that the garden center is wonderful! If you think you might like to look around before we head over\, plan for that and give yourself plenty of time.

SUMMARY:Warren Dunes Hike
DESCRIPTION:We will do this hike again since it’s a favorite. ✌️ afternoon hike at Warren Dunes state park on the shores of Lake Michigan. \nThis is about a 5 mile hike. It is a bit more difficult with the dunes but the pace will be moderate. We can start with the trail entrance off the beach\, take that to trail 4\, then take trail 8 down to the beach. There we can take a walk along the beach back towards the parking lot at whatever pace you prefer. I usually like to spend sometime on the beach. \nWe will be meeting at Sawyer Garden Center 15 minutes earlier and carpool in. Understand that the garden center is wonderful! If you think you might like to look around before we head over\, plan for that and give yourself plenty of time. If you are meeting us at the park\, understand that we may be a few minutes after 12 so you may have to wait for us. We can meet you near the pavilion at the northernmost parking lot that is open. They typically have only one parking lot open this time of year. My phone goes into sos mode\, so I won’t be able to receive any comments when we are at the lake.\nPlease update your RSVP and remember to be kind and patient.\nWe can go out to eat after but anymore\, restaurants are so loud it takes away from the experience for me. So I’ll probably bow out of that.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun night of dance!\nContra dance is a traditional form of dance done in long lines of people facing each other. The term is the English equivalent of the French *contredanse\,* with *contre* meaning “against” or “opposite.” Contra dance dates back to the 18th century in Britain\, France\, and North America. George and Martha Washington and Thomas Jefferson were enthusiastic dancers.\nThe dances\, which are all named\, combine common figures — circle right/left\, swing your partner\, dos-a-dos\, allemande\, ladies’ chain\, promenade\, etc. At the start of each individual dance\, the caller names the dance and walks the dancers through the sequence of figures. When the dance starts\, the band starts playing and the caller calls the figures. While the tradition of dancing goes back three hundred years\, many of the dances themselves are the creations of dancers\, callers\, and musicians today.\nAdmission: $8.00/regular; $5.00/student and unwaged; $4.00 under 12; $20/family.\nThose on limited incomes can pay what they feel they can afford. \nThis is in the community building at Pinhook Park. I have not been there but will try to find it ahead of time.

DESCRIPTION:if you can’t find parking at the main lot\, there is a huge overflow parking area across Mineral Springs rd. \nmeet near the washrooms at Chellberg Farm at 11 CT\, 12 ET \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \nWabash Valley Hiking & Social Group https://www.meetup.com/wabash-valley-hiking-social-meetup-group/ \ndear hiking friends– \ntoday’s hike features a cross section of the history of the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. we have taken this hike every year since 2002\, except for 2020. \nplease check the weather before departure and have appropriate clothing and equipment [https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US](https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US) . bring along a lunch which we will eat on the trail\, plus enough water (one quart minimum). \nremember\, this is a fee area–you must DISPLAY A PERMIT to park here–so before you come to the lot\, make sure you study the rather Byzantine and non-user-friendly fee structure at the National Park website\nhttps://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/fees.htm \ni’m not sure how much they enforce this off season\, or what the fines are\, but be informed and beware. \ni will pass a hat for a small donation to cover expenses: mostly\, this is the cost of using the meetup website\, but sometimes I need some dinero to pay for occasional gifts to neighbors who let us use their parking\, prizes for contests. as long as i can cover this with people putting $2-3 in a can\, i prefer not doing anything more binding or complicated. \nthis is a complex route\, with lots of unexpected twists and turns–if you get ahead of me\, make sure to stop whenever you come to a junction with another trail or road\, or in any place where the trail is ambiguous or confusing. also\, make sure you know where your car is parked. \ni also encourage you all to take and post pictures to the site. if you don’t know how to post to the site\, text pictures to me\, and i will post them.\ni decided to tweak our route so that we hit more of the points of historic interest first\, and move the long walk across the prairie\, over the river\, and through the woods to later in the hike. \nwe will gather near the restrooms off the parking lot\, and wait till 11:20 CT for all to arrive. then we will turn right at the valley’s edge and walk a short distance till we come to the Chellberg Farm. \nthis is a preserved farmstead which was owned by Swedish immigrants to the region\, and run in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. there are animals in the farmyard and the barn. \nafter that\, we will ascend some bridges and stairs up a streambed and across a road to the Bailly Family Cemetery. it is quite elaborate for a pioneer graveyard\, with a stonework mound and a tall wooden cross\, and carved gravestones with passages from the Bible and the Apocrypha. \nwe will tarry there awhile\, then cross Oak Hill rd\, and begin the west leg of the Bailly-Chellberg trail. after a short distance\, we will come to a junction where you can make a choice. \nif you go left\, within a half a mile\, we will come to the Bailly Homestead\, with preserved buildings covering about a century of construction from the family of fur trapper-trader Joseph Bailly and his descendants. we will look around for a while\, then arrive back at the parking lot in 0.3 miles\, for a total day’s hike of 1.8 miles. i will lead this shorter version of the hike. \nif you go right\, we will walk about 3/4 of a mile through the woods\, then over a boardwalk\, and cross the Little Calumet river on a bridge\, then ascend a hill\, and cross the Mnoke’ Prairie\, then back over the Little Cal\, and arrive at the Bailly Homestead\, and back to the parking lot for a total day’s hike of 4.0 miles. SUMMARY:Opt Outside Hike Potato Creek State Park
DESCRIPTION:We will take a hike through the trails in Potato Creek State Park on Black Friday. Opting outside for a social hike. Potato Creek has an eagle’s nest near by and an osprey nest in the park.\nThis will be a moderate/fast hike. A few inclines\, with clear trails. It may be muddy in spots.\nWe will meet in the Nature Center parking lot and start on trail 1 behind the playground\, then trail 2 and take that over to trail 4\, then back to trail 2 and finish one trail 1. This will be around 7 or 8 miles. If you want a shorter hike\, you can skip the trail 4 loop and head back on trail 2.\nIf you have an Indiana state park pass\, that will get you in. If not\, the entrance fee is $7 in state\, $9 out of state. You can met me at the information center\, park there and ride in with me. I can take 3 people. Let me know ahead of time.\nIt does take 5 ish minutes to drive back to the nature center\, so plan to give yourself extra time to meet at 11am. \nUpdate your RSVP if your status changes and remember to be kind and patient. \nThe park is hosting an opt outside hike at the same time as ours 😊 they are starting at the cemetery.
