SUMMARY:New Year's Eve Adventure with Rick's Group
DESCRIPTION:We will be joining Rick’s group for a New Year’s Eve adventure. We start out with a hike in Warren Woods meeting there at 2pm South Bend timezone\, this is about an hour hike. Eileen is hosting the even and has a wonderful day and evening planned. Please see her description below and let me know if you have any questions. I’ll be joining for the afternoon hike only and you are also welcome to just join in for any portion of the activities. They will most liking be meeting for brunch in the am on the first if that interest you. A lot of options. Here is the description from Eileen. \n*All times in this description are EST. Join us to celebrate New Year’s Eve with an Acorn favorite\, Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts! Miles will take the audience right into 2025 with a countdown at midnight to ring in the New Year! Show starts at 10pm EST. Get your General Admission ticket on the website in advance for $35 ($40 the week of the event) https://acornlive.org/ \nWe’ll meet for a hike at the Sugarwood Forest Preserve at 2pm EST for those interested in the old growth Warren Woods Forest Primeval Trail\, 6855 Elm Valley Rd\, Three Oaks\, MI\nfor a lovely winter hike before the evening festivities begin. This trail has huge old growth beech trees and is an easy to moderate trail. It should take an hour or so. \nFor dinner we have a reservation at the Hummingbird Lounge in New Buffalo at 7:15pm. \nAccommodations at the Marina Grand Hotel in New Buffalo are at $226 for a queen double suite with kitchen and sofa sleeper\, $293 for a king suite with a kitchen and sofa sleeper as well. Doubling and tripling up are good options as the rooms are pretty big. There are also ample options for accommodations in New Buffalo on Airbnb and at other hotels if you’d like to stay. After Mad Bert\, we will head back to the parking area for a Water/ Loo/Toilet break and circle up for a little chat/New Year 2025 brief meditation/1 resolution statement.\n3. Those still “full of beans” will head out for another 45-minute loop around St Pats Park.\n4. **Possible** Asian warm soup or tea afterward.\n5. **REMINDER** to please UN-rsvp if you are unable to make it\, it is terribly cold outside to be waiting for folks to appear \n**WEATHER NOTE**: All January and February events will have the weather caveat. DESCRIPTION:We can meet and go for a walk through the trails and gardens at Fernwood. I haven’t hike the tails here yet\, I always get distracted by the gardens. I’m not sure how many miles or how many trails there are but they are located on 105 acres. They have a cafe\, I’m not sure if they have food or not but we could go for a bite to eat after.\nThe entrance fee is $10 if you are not a member. I’ll see about getting a pass from the library or if anyone has a pass\, I believe you can bring in guest.\nThis will be a moderate pace social hike.\nAs always\, be kind and patient in groups.\nUpdate your rsvp if your plans change.

DESCRIPTION:**🚶‍➡️🚶‍♀️🌛🌃🥾Friday GAIT Night Winter Walk Group (multiple locations)** \nMy PhD Winter term is lighter compared to last 2 terms🥳💃🎉 … so I am going to plan a **weekly 1-2 hour moderate walking FRIDAY GAIT NIGHT experience** along Michiana’s night-friendly pathways. I will try to keep it interesting with a variety of locations. \n**As Always there is possibility** of gathering for some warming vittles/bevvies after our healthy jaunt (First Fridays in the downtown area & by group vote and nearby locations for other walks — I am an early bird to rise person\, so I may or may not join the group – depends on the evening!!). \n**GAIT:** Primarily paved walkways\, but anticipate recent wet\, slush\, ice possibilities under the dark night lighting of street lights. We will gauge or group GAIT accordingly – nobody left behind! Typically about 2.5-3 miles per hour – allowing for chatting and a good heartrate in wintry conditions. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun night of dance!\nWe did this in November and had a blast. Once we figured out how everything worked and got over (for sum of us) touching other people it was so much fun! And a very good workout if you are looking to get your heart rate up. There was a live band which was wonderful too. It sounds like they will be there for this one too. \nContra dance is a traditional form of dance done in long lines of people facing each other. The term is the English equivalent of the French *contredanse\,* with *contre* meaning “against” or “opposite.” Contra dance dates back to the 18th century in Britain\, France\, and North America. George and Martha Washington and Thomas Jefferson were enthusiastic dancers.\nThe dances\, which are all named\, combine common figures — circle right/left\, swing your partner\, dos-a-dos\, allemande\, ladies’ chain\, promenade\, etc. At the start of each individual dance\, the caller names the dance and walks the dancers through the sequence of figures. When the dance starts\, the band starts playing and the caller calls the figures. While the tradition of dancing goes back three hundred years\, many of the dances themselves are the creations of dancers\, callers\, and musicians today.\nAdmission: $8.00/regular; $5.00/student and unwaged; $4.00 under 12; $20/family.\nThose on limited incomes can pay what they feel they can afford. \nThis is in the community building at Pinhook Park. I have not been there but will try to find it ahead of time.

DESCRIPTION:We will meet down by the boat launch in the parking lot. When you enter the park\, turn right and stay on that road until you see the canoe rental building and the parking lot. You can only enter the park off of Auten Rd. Be aware if your gps takes you into Michigan\, you are going the wrong way. The parking lot is next to the river.\nThere is typically no charge to enter the park.\nWe will start with a hike through Madeline Bertrand if the trails are open\, then St Pats. SUMMARY:Permaculture Greenhouse Gardening House Plant Cutting and Seed Exchange
DESCRIPTION:It’s never too soon to work on gardening plans. We can meet for a seed exchange and start a discussion about our own gardening challenges.\nThe theory of Permaculture is creating an ecosystem that brings the land back to a balance that helps become more self-sufficient and sustainable. From soil to invasive plants to fertilizer\, we can research our own unique land situations and see what would bring balance.\nWe will also discuss greenhouses\, how to utilize them in our area. What would you use it for\, growing plants or overwintering tender perennials. The basics to know before you build.\nWe can discuss general gardening issues. This will be all about plants and working with the land we are on. No matter how big or small\, each land speaks to us about what is out of balance and listening to what the needs are to bring it back to balance.\nWe will discuss the Korean natural gardening method which is an indigenous practice of working with the microbes in the soil.\nBring any seeds you have that you would like to share and take cuttings off of any house plants that you have that you would like to share a cutting. If you don’t have any\, no worries\, just attend if you are interested in plants 🙂 \nMeeting at 3pm St Joe County Library Main Branch. We can meet near the main entrance or find room Study Room L205. DESCRIPTION:We will take a hike through the trails in Potato Creek State Park. Potato Creek has an eagle’s nest near by and an osprey nest in the park.\nThis will be a moderate/fast hike. A few inclines\, with clear trails. \nWe will meet in the cemetery parking lot and start on trail 4\, then trail 2\, trail 1 and back to trail 4. This will be around 6 or 7 miles. Trail 2 is a t intersection about half way point on trail 4.\nIf you have an Indiana state park pass\, that will get you in. If not\, the entrance fee is $7 in state\, $9 out of state. You can met me at the information center\, park there and ride in with me. I can take 3 people. Let me know ahead of time.\nThe turn for the cemetery is the first turn after you go through the park entrance. \nUpdate your RSVP if your status changes and remember to be kind and patient.

DESCRIPTION:**🔍👀🫵THIS is a discovery meetup (not an actual meetup event YET -** *there is no in-person meetup scheduled yet***)** — \nWho is interested in **committing to a monthly** **hooking in a circle** with other joyful hookers? 🧶🪝 \nIt does not have to be crochet\, but I am a beginner hooker with grandiose plans and figure like-minded hookers might want to do so in a social circle! *(we will not judge you clickity clacking knitters who decide to join us).* \n**RSVP YES and answer the questions and/or comment below. Feel free to post a photo or 2 of your recent projects\, if you have any.** \n**Date/Time: thinking – Monthly 2nd or 3rd Sunday’s at 2 or 3p** \n**Location:** thinking – the St Joe Public libraries have some spaces avail for rent – free for community clubs and nonprofits — not sure if we qualify\, but I will find out depending on interest. If a small circle (4-8) we could also volunteer our homes or meet at quiet cafe’s. There is an existing crochet circle at the Miami library and 1 or 2 at cafes/bars & many online venues. \n*I was thinking of reserving at the Main downtown south bend library classroom as a starting point.* \n**Materials:** *Beginners:* larger crochet hook\, small scissors\, and cheap thick strand yarn that doesn’t split (ask Joanne’s/hobby lobby/Walmart/Meijers helpers; *Not-beginners*: you do you. Goodwill sometimes has bags of scrap yarn/hooks\, that are good enough to begin with. Or many of us have extra. \n**The Idea:** \n1. Each scheduled meetup would include a beginner’s YouTube video to complete prior to the circle…primarily for those brand new to hooking to try/practice before the circle meetup.\n2. At the circle meetup\, the first 15 min would be spent with those in the know helping the newbies with any issues they had with the new stitches. Followed by a brief in-person tutorial on an easy project the new stitches can be used for.\n3. the rest of the circle time would be spent working on the same project chosen by the group but possibly at different skill levels. IE: Beginner: 1 color granny square(s) Intermediate: multicolor granny square purse/bag Advanced: fancy\, layered frilly\, granny square project.\nOR\nwe could bring whatever project we are currently working on.\nOR\nwe could create a GROUP charity piece together such as:\n4. project afghans/scarves for sick kids\, women’s refuge\, hospice\, nursing homes\, etc. These often turn out really fun\, but can be a bit of a challenge to connect together. \n*Feel free to add suggestions and comments as to the best day/time/location/info\, etc…!* \nIf a minimum of 8 are interested\, I will create our first Sunday Happy Hookers Meetup for February or March 2025. \n**Everyone** is welcome; if you can hold a hook\, you can crochet!! I will try to keep it interesting with a variety of locations. \n**As Always there is possibility** of gathering for some warming vittles/bevvies after our healthy jaunt (First Fridays in the downtown area & by group vote and nearby locations for other walks — I am an early bird to rise person\, so I may or may not join the group – depends on the evening!!). \n**GAIT:** Primarily paved walkways\, but anticipate recent wet\, slush\, ice possibilities under the dark night lighting of street lights. We will gauge or group GAIT accordingly – nobody left behind! Typically about 2.5-3 miles per hour – allowing for chatting and a good heartrate in wintry conditions.
