SUMMARY:Afternoon Hike at Fernwood
DESCRIPTION:We can meet and go for a walk through the trails and gardens at Fernwood. I haven’t hike the tails here yet\, I always get distracted by the gardens. I’m not sure how many miles or how many trails there are but they are located on 105 acres. They have a cafe\, I’m not sure if they have food or not but we could go for a bite to eat after.\nThe entrance fee is $10 if you are not a member. I’ll see about getting a pass from the library or if anyone has a pass\, I believe you can bring in guest.\nThis will be a moderate pace social hike.\nAs always\, be kind and patient in groups.\nUpdate your rsvp if your plans change.

DESCRIPTION:**🚶‍➡️🚶‍♀️🌛🌃🥾Friday GAIT Night Winter Walk Group (multiple locations)** \nMy PhD Winter term is lighter compared to last 2 terms🥳💃🎉 … so I am going to plan a monthly **1-2 hour moderate walking FRIDAY GAIT NIGHT experience** along Michiana’s night-friendly pathways. I will try to keep it interesting with a variety of locations. \n**REMINDER** to please **UN-rsvp** if you cannot make it; it is terribly cold outside to be waiting for folks to appear that don’t…I am very optimistic. Hahaha. \n**As Always there is possibility** of gathering for some warming vittles/bevvies after our healthy jaunt (First Fridays in the downtown area & by group vote and nearby locations for other walks — I am an early bird to rise person\, so I may or may not join the group – depends on the evening!!). \n**GAIT:** Primarily paved walkways\, but anticipate recent wet\, slush\, ice possibilities under the night lighting of street lights. We will gauge or group GAIT accordingly – nobody left behind! Typically about 2.5-3 miles per hour – allowing for chatting and a good heartrate in wintry conditions. We will begin by parking in St Patrick’s Park (map below) and heading into Mad Berts for a nice 45-minute jaunt along the wintery pathways. There are plenty of pretty river and old forest views\, and possibly a bird of prey or two.\n2. After Mad Bert\, we will head back to the parking area for a Water/ Loo/Toilet break and circle up for a little chat/New Year 2025 brief meditation/1 resolution statement.\n3. Those still “full of beans” will head out for another 45-minute loop around St Pats Park.\n4. **Possible** Asian warm soup or tea afterward.\n5. **REMINDER** to please UN-rsvp if you are unable to make it\, it is terribly cold outside to be waiting for folks to appear \n**WEATHER NOTE**: All January and February events will have the weather caveat. DESCRIPTION:We will be joining Rick’s group for a New Year’s Eve adventure. We start out with a hike in Warren Woods meeting there at 2pm South Bend timezone\, this is about an hour hike. Eileen is hosting the even and has a wonderful day and evening planned. Please see her description below and let me know if you have any questions. I’ll be joining for the afternoon hike only and you are also welcome to just join in for any portion of the activities. They will most liking be meeting for brunch in the am on the first if that interest you. A lot of options. Here is the description from Eileen. \n*All times in this description are EST. Join us to celebrate New Year’s Eve with an Acorn favorite\, Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts! Miles will take the audience right into 2025 with a countdown at midnight to ring in the New Year! Show starts at 10pm EST. Get your General Admission ticket on the website in advance for $35 ($40 the week of the event) https://acornlive.org/ \nWe’ll meet for a hike at the Sugarwood Forest Preserve at 2pm EST for those interested in the old growth Warren Woods Forest Primeval Trail\, 6855 Elm Valley Rd\, Three Oaks\, MI\nfor a lovely winter hike before the evening festivities begin. This trail has huge old growth beech trees and is an easy to moderate trail. It should take an hour or so. \nFor dinner we have a reservation at the Hummingbird Lounge in New Buffalo at 7:15pm. \nAccommodations at the Marina Grand Hotel in New Buffalo are at $226 for a queen double suite with kitchen and sofa sleeper\, $293 for a king suite with a kitchen and sofa sleeper as well. Doubling and tripling up are good options as the rooms are pretty big. There are also ample options for accommodations in New Buffalo on Airbnb and at other hotels if you’d like to stay. SUMMARY:Opt Outside Hike Potato Creek State Park
DESCRIPTION:We will take a hike through the trails in Potato Creek State Park on Black Friday. Opting outside for a social hike. Potato Creek has an eagle’s nest near by and an osprey nest in the park.\nThis will be a moderate/fast hike. A few inclines\, with clear trails. It may be muddy in spots.\nWe will meet in the Nature Center parking lot and start on trail 1 behind the playground\, then trail 2 and take that over to trail 4\, then back to trail 2 and finish one trail 1. This will be around 7 or 8 miles. If you want a shorter hike\, you can skip the trail 4 loop and head back on trail 2.\nIf you have an Indiana state park pass\, that will get you in. If not\, the entrance fee is $7 in state\, $9 out of state. You can met me at the information center\, park there and ride in with me. I can take 3 people. Let me know ahead of time.\nIt does take 5 ish minutes to drive back to the nature center\, so plan to give yourself extra time to meet at 11am. \nUpdate your RSVP if your status changes and remember to be kind and patient. \nThe park is hosting an opt outside hike at the same time as ours 😊 they are starting at the cemetery.

DESCRIPTION:if you can’t find parking at the main lot\, there is a huge overflow parking area across Mineral Springs rd. \nmeet near the washrooms at Chellberg Farm at 11 CT\, 12 ET \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \nWabash Valley Hiking & Social Group https://www.meetup.com/wabash-valley-hiking-social-meetup-group/ \ndear hiking friends– \ntoday’s hike features a cross section of the history of the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. we have taken this hike every year since 2002\, except for 2020. \nplease check the weather before departure and have appropriate clothing and equipment [https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US](https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US) . bring along a lunch which we will eat on the trail\, plus enough water (one quart minimum). \nremember\, this is a fee area–you must DISPLAY A PERMIT to park here–so before you come to the lot\, make sure you study the rather Byzantine and non-user-friendly fee structure at the National Park website\nhttps://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/fees.htm \ni’m not sure how much they enforce this off season\, or what the fines are\, but be informed and beware. \ni will pass a hat for a small donation to cover expenses: mostly\, this is the cost of using the meetup website\, but sometimes I need some dinero to pay for occasional gifts to neighbors who let us use their parking\, prizes for contests. as long as i can cover this with people putting $2-3 in a can\, i prefer not doing anything more binding or complicated. \nthis is a complex route\, with lots of unexpected twists and turns–if you get ahead of me\, make sure to stop whenever you come to a junction with another trail or road\, or in any place where the trail is ambiguous or confusing. also\, make sure you know where your car is parked. \ni also encourage you all to take and post pictures to the site. if you don’t know how to post to the site\, text pictures to me\, and i will post them.\ni decided to tweak our route so that we hit more of the points of historic interest first\, and move the long walk across the prairie\, over the river\, and through the woods to later in the hike. \nwe will gather near the restrooms off the parking lot\, and wait till 11:20 CT for all to arrive. then we will turn right at the valley’s edge and walk a short distance till we come to the Chellberg Farm. \nthis is a preserved farmstead which was owned by Swedish immigrants to the region\, and run in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. there are animals in the farmyard and the barn. \nafter that\, we will ascend some bridges and stairs up a streambed and across a road to the Bailly Family Cemetery. it is quite elaborate for a pioneer graveyard\, with a stonework mound and a tall wooden cross\, and carved gravestones with passages from the Bible and the Apocrypha. \nwe will tarry there awhile\, then cross Oak Hill rd\, and begin the west leg of the Bailly-Chellberg trail. after a short distance\, we will come to a junction where you can make a choice. \nif you go left\, within a half a mile\, we will come to the Bailly Homestead\, with preserved buildings covering about a century of construction from the family of fur trapper-trader Joseph Bailly and his descendants. we will look around for a while\, then arrive back at the parking lot in 0.3 miles\, for a total day’s hike of 1.8 miles. i will lead this shorter version of the hike. \nif you go right\, we will walk about 3/4 of a mile through the woods\, then over a boardwalk\, and cross the Little Calumet river on a bridge\, then ascend a hill\, and cross the Mnoke’ Prairie\, then back over the Little Cal\, and arrive at the Bailly Homestead\, and back to the parking lot for a total day’s hike of 4.0 miles.
