SUMMARY:Dunes Heritage hike at Indiana Dunes National Park
DESCRIPTION:if you can’t find parking at the main lot\, there is a huge overflow parking area across Mineral Springs rd. \nmeet near the washrooms at Chellberg Farm at 11 CT\, 12 ET \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \nWabash Valley Hiking & Social Group https://www.meetup.com/wabash-valley-hiking-social-meetup-group/ \ndear hiking friends– \ntoday’s hike features a cross section of the history of the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. we have taken this hike every year since 2002\, except for 2020. \nplease check the weather before departure and have appropriate clothing and equipment [https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US](https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US) . bring along a lunch which we will eat on the trail\, plus enough water (one quart minimum). \nremember\, this is a fee area–you must DISPLAY A PERMIT to park here–so before you come to the lot\, make sure you study the rather Byzantine and non-user-friendly fee structure at the National Park website\nhttps://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/fees.htm \ni’m not sure how much they enforce this off season\, or what the fines are\, but be informed and beware. \ni will pass a hat for a small donation to cover expenses: mostly\, this is the cost of using the meetup website\, but sometimes I need some dinero to pay for occasional gifts to neighbors who let us use their parking\, prizes for contests. as long as i can cover this with people putting $2-3 in a can\, i prefer not doing anything more binding or complicated. \nthis is a complex route\, with lots of unexpected twists and turns–if you get ahead of me\, make sure to stop whenever you come to a junction with another trail or road\, or in any place where the trail is ambiguous or confusing. also\, make sure you know where your car is parked. \ni also encourage you all to take and post pictures to the site. if you don’t know how to post to the site\, text pictures to me\, and i will post them.\ni decided to tweak our route so that we hit more of the points of historic interest first\, and move the long walk across the prairie\, over the river\, and through the woods to later in the hike. \nwe will gather near the restrooms off the parking lot\, and wait till 11:20 CT for all to arrive. then we will turn right at the valley’s edge and walk a short distance till we come to the Chellberg Farm. \nthis is a preserved farmstead which was owned by Swedish immigrants to the region\, and run in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. there are animals in the farmyard and the barn. \nafter that\, we will ascend some bridges and stairs up a streambed and across a road to the Bailly Family Cemetery. it is quite elaborate for a pioneer graveyard\, with a stonework mound and a tall wooden cross\, and carved gravestones with passages from the Bible and the Apocrypha. \nwe will tarry there awhile\, then cross Oak Hill rd\, and begin the west leg of the Bailly-Chellberg trail. after a short distance\, we will come to a junction where you can make a choice. \nif you go left\, within a half a mile\, we will come to the Bailly Homestead\, with preserved buildings covering about a century of construction from the family of fur trapper-trader Joseph Bailly and his descendants. we will look around for a while\, then arrive back at the parking lot in 0.3 miles\, for a total day’s hike of 1.8 miles. i will lead this shorter version of the hike. \nif you go right\, we will walk about 3/4 of a mile through the woods\, then over a boardwalk\, and cross the Little Calumet river on a bridge\, then ascend a hill\, and cross the Mnoke’ Prairie\, then back over the Little Cal\, and arrive at the Bailly Homestead\, and back to the parking lot for a total day’s hike of 4.0 miles. Erin will lead this longer version of the hike. \nhope to see you there\, \nRick \ndirections: \nfrom US 12\, turn south on Mineral Springs rd; enter the parking lot marked “Chellberg Farm”; if the parking lot is full\, there is ample overflow parking across the road; try to arrive by 11:00; we will wait till 11:20\, then depart on foot. \nfrom US 20\, turn north on Mineral Springs rd; enter the parking lot marked “Chellberg Farm”; if the parking lot is full\, there is ample overflow parking across the road; try to arrive by 11:00; we will wait till 11:20\, then depart on foot. \n* * *\nto view photos of previous hikes by this group at this location\, see below.\nour group has actually been doing this hike since November 24\, 2002\, but photography was in its infancy then\, so i don’t have albums for those years. : ) \n2009 https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/photos/765778/ \n2010 https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/photos/1167250/ \n2011 https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/photos/4540442/ \n2012 https://www.meetup.com/ricks-hiking-fun-group/photos/11801082/

SUMMARY:Porter-Brickyard Trail hike for the Vernal Equinox at the National Park
DESCRIPTION:this event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \nmy sources say that as of last weekend\, some parts of the trails here are muddy\, or have water puddles. i would wear boots\, and carry a walking stick. \nif you have trouble parking\, note the huge overflow parking area across the road. \nHiking automatically involve risks from weather\, trail conditions\, even plants and animals. \nwe don’t know your state of health\, or fitness level\, but YOU do\, or should\, so please monitor yourself\, and–for your sake and ours–stay away from events that involve activities with unwanted difficulty\, or an unacceptable risk level. \nmeet near the washrooms at Chellberg Farm at 11 CT\, 12 ET \ndear hiking friends– \ntoday’s hike will start at a familiar trailhead\, but go off in a different direction from the one we usually take. moreover\, we will have three variations of the route so you may choose how far and fast you want to hike. \nyou may go with Rick for an EASY hike of 2.0 miles. this route will be on mostly flat ground at a leisurely pace\, and we will have stops at Chellberg Farm and the Bailly Homestead\, so almost anyone should have minimal difficulty with this hike. \nyou may go with Kathy for a MODERATE hike of 5.7 miles. the pace on this hike will be faster\, with a longer route\, but still mostly level ground. \nor you may go with Eileen for a more RUGGED hike of 7.1 miles\, with a faster pace\, and 2 steep climbs over loose sand with some uneven terrain\, and treacherous tree roots on one descent in particular. \nyou don’t need to decide on your selection till we come to the departure junctions\, but for your sake and ours\, don’t take a route that is beyond your abilities. \nplease check the weather before departure and have appropriate clothing and equipment [https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US](https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US) . bring along a lunch which we will eat on the trail\, plus enough water (one quart minimum).\nremember\, this is a fee area–you must DISPLAY A PERMIT to park here–\nhttps://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/fees.htm \ni will pass a hat for a small donation to cover expenses: mostly\, this is the cost of using the meetup website\, but sometimes I have other expenses. as long as i can cover this with people putting $2-3 in a can\, i prefer not doing anything more binding or complicated. \nif you have symptoms of\, or have recently tested positive for Covid-19 (or any other contagious disease)\, please DO NOT ATTEND. \nmake sure you know where your car is parked\, in case you want to turn back at any point. \ni also encourage you all to take and post pictures to meetup. i ask this particularly because we won’t all be taking the same route. \nwe will gather near the restrooms off the parking lot\, and wait till 11:20 CT for all to arrive. then we will turn right at the valley’s edge and walk a short distance till we come to the Chellberg Farm.\nthis is a preserved farmstead owned by Swedish immigrants\, and run in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. there are animals in the farmyard and the barn. \nafter that\, we will ascend some bridges and stairs up a streambed till we come to the Porter-Brickyard Trail\, opened in 2012. there you may turn left and go with me\, Rick. \nwe will follow the Porter-Brickyard trail down a gradual wooded slope into the river valley\, make a left at Howe road\, and arrive at the canoe ramp on the Little Calumet river\, where we will see the spooky antique iron gates of some home that used to stand at that location. \nthen we will tarry a bit at the Bailly Homestead\, with preserved buildings covering about a century of construction from the family of fur trapper-trader Joseph Bailly and his descendants. we will look around for a while\, then arrive back at the parking lot shortly\, for a total day’s hike of 2.0 miles. \n…or\, when we reach the Porter-Brickyard trail you may go right\, with Eileen and Kathy\, and take the trail through the woods\, and over the elaborate steel bridge that crosses US 12. \nat the Greenbelt trailhead\, we will turn west\, and cross the narrow causeway between some small ponds and Cowles Bog; we will continue a ways on the boundary between the prairie and forest\, till we come to another trail junction\, where you may go right with Kathy on a loop around the edge of the bog\, for a total day’s hike of 5.7 miles. \n…or you may continue left with Eileen\, down some steep dunes to the lakefront\, up another dune and back for a total day’s hike of 7.1 miles. \nwhichever route you choose\, we hope to see you there\, \nRick \ndirections:\nfrom US 12\, turn south on Mineral Springs rd\, or from US 20\, turn north on Mineral Springs rd; enter the parking lot marked “Chellberg Farm”; if the parking lot is full\, there is ample overflow parking across the road; try to arrive by 12:00; we will wait till 12:20\, then depart on foot.

SUMMARY:Dunes Heritage hike
DESCRIPTION:this is the hike rescheduled from November 12\, then March 18\, then March 25! \nmeet near the washrooms at Chellberg Farm at 11 CT\, 12 ET \nthis event will be sponsored jointly with Rick’s Hiking and Fun Group https://www.meetup.com/Ricks-Hiking-Fun-Group/ . \ndear hiking friends– \ntoday’s hike features a cross section of the history of the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. we have taken this hike every year since 2002\, except for 2020. \ni also encourage you all to take and post pictures to the site. if you don’t know how to post to the site\, text pictures to me\, and i will post them. \ni’ve decided to tweak our route this year so that we hit all the points of historic interest first\, and save the long walk across the prairie\, over the river\, and through the woods as an optional section at the end. \ni had previously planned to change our starting point also\, but decided that the trailhead i had hoped to use had inadequate parking. \nwe will gather near the restrooms off the parking lot\, and wait till 12:20 ET for all to arrive. then we will turn right at the valley’s edge and walk a short distance till we come to the Chellberg Farm. \nthis is a preserved farmstead which was owned by Swedish immigrants to the region\, and operated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. depending on the NPS budget\, there may or may not be animals in the farmyard and the barn. \nafter that\, we will ascend a series of bridges and stairs up a streambed and across a road to the Bailly Family Cemetery. it is quite elaborate for a pioneer graveyard\, with a stonework mound and a tall wooden cross\, and has carved gravestones with passages from the Bible and the Apocrypha. \nwe will tarry there awhile\, then walk south on the west leg of the Bailly-Chellberg trail till we come to the Bailly Homestead\, with preserved buildings covering about a century of construction from the family of fur trapper-trader Joseph Bailly and his descendants. \nwe will look around for a while\, and at this point\, you may decide how much more you want to hike. if you go east\, you will arrive back at the parking lot in 0.3 miles\, for a total day’s hike of 1.8 miles. \nif you go south\, you will cross the Little Calumet river\, ascend a hill\, and come to the Little Calumet trail\, which will take you across the Mnoke’ Prairie\, back over the Little Cal\, over a boardwalk and through the woods\, and back to the parking lot by a much longer way for a total day’s hike of 4.4 miles. \nwe have traditionally ended this hike enjoying the Hoosier hospitality\nof Wagner’s in Porter. \nbut sadly\, i feel that the state of the Pandemic means it still isn’t safe to have a large group at an indoor restaurant in cold weather. \nif someone else wants to organize a restaurant visit\, go right ahead\, but regretfully\, i am not comfortable doing it myself. \nhope to see you there\, \nRick \ndirections: \nfrom US 12\, turn south on Mineral Springs rd; enter the parking lot marked “Chellberg Farm”; try to arrive by 12:00 ET; we will wait till 12:20\, then depart on foot. \nfrom US 20\, turn north on Mineral Springs rd; enter the parking lot marked “Chellberg Farm”; try to arrive by 12:00 ET; we will wait till 12:20\, then depart on foot.
